Things to remember for Commercial architecture
Commercial Architecture involves design of structures to be used for business purposes. It not only emphasizes on functionality but also on appeal while creating an image to suit the type of business and brand name. The impact of this kind of architecture can be seen in any city center where many commercial buildings strive to be be noticed, to stand out.
Four stages of commercial architecture projects are:
- Obtain client requirements
- Determine site location
- Create design proposal
- Submit project plan and costing
The first stage of the process is to meet with the client and get a sense of what he/she requires. The more detailed the understanding of the requirements, the more accurate the proposal can be. Communication with people at different levels of the organization is a must to know how they conduct business, their practical requirements as well as the company’s public image. A study of the publications, corporate image, and marketing materials provided by the organization will help to get a sense of its design preferences and tastes.
The architect and the client must visit the proposed site location and discuss how the site can be used to the client’s advantage. A site visit will give the architect an idea of the prevailing standards in the precinct. The space requirements for the type of building required must also be discussed in detail.
After studying the site and discussing the requirements with the client, the architect can now conceptualize his design ideas. This stage emphasizes on the basic form of the structure and does not involve any detailing. Making a working model or 3D images of the basic form helps the client in visualizing the overall look of the building.
Once the client is satisfied with the conceptual design, the technical aspects and costing of the project can be outlined. The architect needs to then prepare detailed project plans, work out costs, finalize contractors, consultants etc., make schedules and form deadlines. This project plan must be approved by the client before any work can begin.
