All architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates the persons in that space.
An architect is the creative genius who puts function and objects in order, and thus creates a suitable environment, as desired by the user. The ability of an architect lies in the analysis of the natural and built surroundings. being introspective, observant, imaginative and yet pragmatic, informative and attentive adds to his/ her capability of co-relating form and function in configuring spaces adept to human use.
PRACTICE:
An architect is trained and licensed in planning and designing buildings, and participates in supervising their construction. It is a profession wherein creativity and a sound technical knowledge go hand-in-hand with management and a good sense of business. The scope of work of an architect may include preparation of feasibility reports, building audits, design of one or more buildings, and the space in and around them to suit the requirements of the space and client, while giving the project a soul, an identity.
From the point of inception , till its completion, an architect co-ordinates with a team of structural, electrical, mechanical engineers and others who specialize in various aspects of building design and construction, thus ensuring the correctness of design and its construction.
ROLE IN DESIGN:
Architecture, although misconstrued as an art form, is different, in the fact that we build spaces, that are used, and “ gone through” not just seen (as paintings are) or “gone around” and felt(as sculptures are). So it requires to adhere to certain standards of safety and quality control. This makes an architect to get his design be qualified by local and/or federal regulations and building codes. The design needs to comply with local planning and zoning laws, viz., setbacks, height restrictions, parking requirements, transparency requirements and land use. Thus, an architect has to prepare various technical documents ans drawings, co-ordinated and supported by various engineers, which are thebn filed for obtaining permits, certifying the building to be compliant with building, seismic and relevant federal and local regulations.
ROLE IN CONSTRUCTION:
Architects typically put projects to tender on behalf of their clients, make a qualitative and quantitative comparison and advise the client on the award of the project to a general contractor. During the course of construction, they are required to review the progress of work during construction and the shop drawings provided by sub-contractors. Architects prepare and issue site instructions and provide construction contract administration.
An independent construction manager may be hired to assist in design implementation and construction management in case of larger projects.
Besides this, an architect plays a vital role towards the betterment of society and environment. While creating forms that are essential for comfortable human existence, an architect needs to feel responsible towards his surrounding environment as well. This can be achieved thru a holistic approach and an intelligent use of material and technology, thus enabling optimum use of renewable sources of energy. Creating energy- efficient buildings helps in reducing energy combustion and wastage.
The use of locally available construction materials, techniques as well as flora, reduces maintenance costs, while creating environs best-suited to the local micro-climate and lends a unique identity to the entire space.
